Not quite a universal exception
Adam Kotsko ruined my weekend when he sent me a link to the introduction to The Universal Exception, a new collection of Zizek's popular writings and opinion pieces. The introduction, by Rex Butler and Scott Stephens, is called "Slavoj Zizek's...

common criticisms
Critics of PM never tire of writing paragraphs like these: "The worst of it is that this deficiency is not a matter of institutional structure, nor of misplaced priorities, nor of temporary inattention. It arises from the hollowing out of...

Baudrillard on War and World Cup
Of course I only follow the Miers nomination from far away, but my view is very different. I see it in a more vanwordenesque way, so to speak; the nepotism is the pleasant facade, behind which more sinister things are going on. Think about it: the "reconstruction" efforts in Iraq and New Orleans are corrupted enough to make Silvio Berlusconi blush; a warrant has been issued for Delay's arrest; Frist is under investigation; twenty people or so might be indicted next week in the Plame case, including, hopefully, Cheney and Rove; there are still those torture memos lying around... And this exact gang, people who even in their hubris must be aware they're simply criminals, gets to chose a supreme court justice. Do they pick an incompetent cute little crony, because the child-president never forgets his friends? That would be a best case scenario, but not very plausible I think. It's more likely they see some nasty cases before the court in the not so very far future and need one of their own in there.

More like a Trojan pony, then? Or was that Roberts. God, so I'm confused.
This comment is really just an excuse to ask, are there any cartoonists who get the sinister side of bush right? Thinking of this: http://charlotte-street.blogspot.com/2005/05/code-and-punctum.html (unfortunately comments since evaporated)
Because that would be interesting.

David, I appreciate the VanWordenesque insights. You certainly may be right, but I simply think its more pedestrian politics - she was even recommended by the Senate minority leader (A prolife Democrat from Nevada Harry Reid). Rove and company may have thought that the Right would tow the line (or even bitch a little) and they could sneek her through. This way they would avoid a bloody confirmation process. This has obviously back-fired, in part because Rove has been too preoccupied.
But I have always been too naive about such things.

"...they could sneek her through."
That's what I would do! (I hope everyone here knows it's pronounced "snake"...)
