Jesus Camp

200pxjesus_camp Jesus Camp is a documentary about the "Kids On Fire" summer camp, located just outside Devils Lake, North Dakota and run by a Pentecostal children's pastor named Becky Fisher. The film focuses on the indoctrination of the children through music, games and emotional terror.  I would almost describe the methodology as a severe form of brain washing. It is one of the most disturbing pieces I have ever seen, as terrifying as any horror movie you could imagine.

There is a lot one could say about this "camp" - its focus on recruitment, the passion of those running it, or the explicitly political nature of the experience.  But what brought me to write about this today are the revelations surrounding Ted Haggard, the infamous leader of the National Association of Evangelicals.

Ted_haggard Mr. Haggard appears in Jesus Camp when the campers spend a day at his Mega-size New Life Church in Colorado Springs.  Haggard comes across as condescending and insincere - to such degree in fact that he has criticized the film for its portrayal of himself and the movement.   The film makers have made a public response to his criticism:

"We taped at New Life Church for an entire day. Pastor Haggard played with the camera and made jokes through both sermons. We made sure to indicate in the film (from the audience’s laughter), that he was joking around with his parishioners. After the sermons he met and spoke to a child in our film who has dreams of preaching and gave him advice, which we show in a very straightforward way. His interview was also filmed modestly, sitting on the alter after his sermon.  We did not put words in his mouth nor did we instruct him to utter the statement that has garnered him so much attention: “If the Evangelicals vote, they determine the election.”  In fact, we were very careful not to include other material from his sermons that were more inflammatory in nature and could perhaps be interpreted as divisive."

To be honest, his appearance in the film is not all that compelling or even interesting.  What makes Mr Haggard of interest is that a male prostitute has recently accused him of being a regular customer for the last three years.  He further accused Haggard of snorting methamphetamine before their sexual encounters to "heighten the experience."

Yesterday Haggard stepped down as president of the National Association of Evangelicals. He stated, "I am voluntarily stepping aside from leadership so that the overseer process can be allowed to proceed with integrity. I hope to be able to discuss this matter in more detail at a later date. In the interim, I will seek both spiritual advice and guidance." In case one is wondering what he thought of the gay "life style," Haggard has been an outspoken supporter of a proposed amendment on the November 7 Colorado ballot that would ban same sex marriage in that state

Whether or not these accusations turn out to be true, what I find fascinating is the mixture of homo-erotic behavior and right wing moral rectitude.  And I am not simply pointing out the obvious hypocrisy - "do as I say, not as I do."  What I wonder is what level of projection takes place for someone to be publicly hostile to the gay "life style" and privately embracing it, or at least being attracted to it?  And why is this dichotomy such a prevalent issue today?

Air America has been all over this all day (speaking of outrage, Jodi, just listen to the ads they are playing). Apparently he was buying several hundred dollars worth of meth, and there was a lawyer on saying something to the effect, "nobody who pays that much is just trying it for the first time" – but I was wondering if she misunderestimated what "petty cash" may mean to rich people trying to have a little fun. Either that or, you know, there is always the possibility the guy was just getting ripped off without knowing it.

In his defense, Haggard said he "threw the meth away" and was only getting a massage.

Matt, thanks. I imagine Stephanie Miller had a field day with this one. And perhaps it will turn out to be completely fabricated - though that seems unlikely since Mr Haggard did decide to step down. I just can't imagine what someone like this is thinking when they decide to indulge their sinful lusts?

Alain, Stephaine Miller didn't mention Jesus Camp when speaking of the current fiasco. Listening to her show, I kept waiting -- it appeared to be the best plug for this documentary and pull for the non-evanglicial right -- alas she didn't mention the film. A bit of a disappointment. Especially because the majority of people have not heard of the film, do not know of this person's influence.

What does the majority of united states citizen know is the question. At a recent author event with Marjane Satrapi, she mentioned how outside of the u.s. people do not believe what their government spew. Instead, those who are inquisitive look outside to other sources for other perspectives to make up their minds about the 'truth'.

In the u.s., we tend to hope for the truth to be spoken at 6:00 p.m.

Have we not become the horror movies of the 60s? The zombies of the walking dead.

Right that's it. I've had enough. Communist Camp right now! Or send Amerika to space.

Some very strange and funny links at Huffington Post (as one can expect), including a new song, and the ads for Haggard's friend.

The lyrics from the former:

I BEEN PREACHIFYING MORALIZING EVERY DAY / TRYING TO GET ALL LOST SOULS TO COME MY WAY / CAUSE I KNOW WHAT YOU SINNERS LACK AND I KNOW WHAT YOU NEED / A BACK RUB FROM A MUSCLE MAN AND GODSPEED

CHORUS
GIVE ME METH AND MAN ASS ON A SUNDAY MORNING
METH AND MAN ASS SURE AS I AM BORN AGAIN
METH AND MAN ASS I DON'T NEED NOTHING MORE
JUST METH AND MAN ASS AND WE'LL PRAISE THE LORD

THIS TRAIN DON'T TAKE NO SINNERS
NO MURDERERS, NO THEIVES, NO GAYS
YOU ASK ME WHAT KEEPS THIS TRAIN RUNNING SMOOTH
WELL, I'LL BOW MY HEAD AND SOFTLY SAY

(CHORUS)

IF A MAN LAYS WITH A MAN AS WITH A WOMAN
THE BIBLE SAYS SO SHALL HE BE KILLED
IF A MAN SNORTS A GRAM WITH A MALE PROSTITUTE
SOMEONE'S COLLECTION BASKET'S GETTING
FILLED

(CHORUS)

I'M LOOKING FOR SOMEONE TO TURN THE OTHER CHEEK
I'LL GO ON LARRY KING AND TELL HIM "LARRY, I WAS WEAK"
DELIVER ME FROM EVIL AND DELIVER ME FROM GREED
DELIVER ME A HOT STUD AND A COUPLE GRAMS OF SPEED

(CHORUS)

There seems to be assumption that Haggard was out for 'ass.' I rather doubt it, as Mike Jones is the stereotype of Rough Trade and knows it. That's what usually gets the big money in those rackets. Yes, it's capitalism all over again. Screw Magazine used to have a 'TV Guide,' may still do. But those were transvestites who did get paid for quasi-female performance.

Unless the newly released (as of today) 'sexual immorality' is untrue, Haggard would have wanted to feel his castration complex more keenly and gushingly than he could have by merely doing a little mule-plowing.

Yes, now that I take a look at those ads, that clinches it: Jones appeared in the scholarly journals 'Inches' and 'Honcho,' among others. Even by ancient Greek standards, Haggard was therefore a rather poor piece of citizenry.
