Carnival of Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak

A week-long symposium directing the collective attention and efforts of Long Sunday and the Valve, among others, to the work of Gayatri Spivak. See the proposed schedule.

The primary text under discussion is "Scattered Speculations on the Question of Value".

Other suggested texts include "Ghostwriting"; "History" (Critique of Postcolonial Reason, chapter three); "Subaltern Studies: Deconstructing Historiography"; and "The Trajectory of the Subaltern in My Work" (lecture).

Gayatri Spivak combines Marxism and deconstruction in the name of postcolonial feminism, and at the crossroads of literary studies and philosophy. The aim of this symposium is a collective reading and discussion of an exemplary text.

This page weaves together contributions to the symposium. The "wire" on the sidebar aggregates other resources on Spivak and postcolonialism, via del.icio.us and technorati. The "Spivak tags" offer an index to these resources. (You might have to click on a tag twice before it kicks in.)

This page is an experiment. Many thanks to Brian Lamb and Enej Bajgoric for their help putting it together. Comments and suggestions to jon@posthegemony.org.
